  1. B. Spanish

Taino's called the main island of Puerto Rico Boriken, the spanish used the equivalent word Borinquen (aparently they had problems to pronunciate Boriken or just like more the sound of Borinquen).   However for Spain the original name (by 1493) was "Isla de San Juan Bautista", and the capital city was "Puerto Rico".  Years later the names get changed and Puerto Rico become the name of the island, and San Juan the name of the capital city.

The small groups of other european countries like Portugal also came to PR, however the influence of portuguese people on PR culture was very very small.  England attempted to take PR out from Spain but were not successful.  There was no influence of Portugal or England in the name of Puerto Rico.

By the time of USA take over of PR (1898) the name was already selected from more than 400years.

  2. The Spanish: Christopher Colombus. He called it Puerto Rico (translation---Rich Port) Because puerto rico was rich in gold, and filled with inmense beauty.

However, the most cultural name is Boriken or Borinquen, given by the tainos.

That's where puerto ricans get the synonym "boricua" (from Boriken)

  3. Spanish.

The tainos use to call it Boriken or Borinquen.

Portuguese and english are not related to us.

  4. Of course it's B .

  5. B and Americans

spain named boriken(named by the tainos) San Juan Bautista and some named it puerto rico for the rich natural resources and gold found in puerto rico, also because it was one of the caribbean islands that had better port access for the trade mark with other countries.

But when United States invaded our island  in 1898, Americans named our island Puerto Rico, for they already heard spaniards call our island puerto rico and san juan bautista, but they permanently named it Puerto Rico.

  6. b

  7. Of course the King of Spain did. The Americans changed it to Porto Rico in 1898 and it was called that untill 1937, when it was changed back to Puerto Rico by the Pto.Rican legislature.

Before that, it was called 'San Juan Bautista' and Puerto Rico was just the name for the city of San Juan. It later got alternated, with the island being called PR and the capital city San Juan.

  8. B of course.  The island was initially named San Juan Bautista and the port where the city of San Juan is located was named Puerto Rico.  Over time the names were exchanged and the city became San Juan Bautista (San Juan for short over time) and the island became Puerto Rico.

  9. B. Spanish. We were discover by Christopher Columbus. And the legend told that when he was at the coast of the island he make and expresion Que puerto rico. (Oh what a rich port).  and it got the name Puerto Rico.
