  3. Me. Old English For Wessex, Southern England. Connection usually made with Samoset, a Pemaquid (Abenaki) sachem from Maine who learned English from an English/South coast fishermen and  startled the Pilgrims by saying "Hello Englishmen."   He taught the English Pilgrims the skills they needed to survive.

    1621 - The Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony signed a peace treaty with Massasoit of the Wampanoags.



    Massasoit and Samoset, visited Plymouth to sign friendship treaty with the English giving them permission of occupy the approximately 12,000 acres of what was to become the Plymouth plantation.  However, Massasoit misunderstood the distinction between the European concept of owning land versus the native idea of sharing it. And so it all began.......
