He was a broadcast journalist. You have to be a good speaker, know your stuff and know the right people I assume. I think originally he covered football, but then stumbled upon Boxing.

I don't know, but he's getting really old. It seems as if it takes a whole round just for him to make a comment. JIM!!!

i don't know, for all the smartest guys on boxing analysts world, he is the one on the frontline.

maybe people and boxing fans love the aura and stereotype of an old wise man doing interviews after the bouts.

kinda like in the movies, everybody could relate to an old guru no matter how senile he is.

Merchant is actually one of the best ever. 10 times better than mouthy Kellerman (although Kellerman has gotten better this past year).
