Who had the nickname USC first Southern California or the University of South Carolina?

Now I know Southern Cal just won some lawsuit about South Carolina using SC on their logos. This made me wonder who had the nickname USC first Southern Cal or South Carolina.

The Gamecock College was the first to use it, but they rarely use it, so USC (Southern Cal) takes full advantage and is known as the USC Trojans. Most powerhouse teams don't have long names like Universiy of Southern California Trojans (they just cut it short) or maybe Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions.

South Carolina has been around longer but I think Southern Cal was the 1st to use the nickname USC .
