  1. Variety is the spice of life - even for rabbits. Our big rex thinks it's a treat when we give her a different kind of hay. Her usual hay is timothy, and sometimes orchard grass, but every now and then we give her a little alfalfa, even though a steady diet of alfalfa is too rich in calcium.

Our Priscilla is a house rabbit, who lives in a high rise condo and so she doesn't go outside. When we go out, we pick fresh dandelion leaves and flowers, clover, and even long grasses, which she devours like crazy. That's a real good treat that's different from her usual lettuce, parsley, cilantro and carrot salad.

Sugary treats should be kept to a minimum, but the occasional bit of apple, banana or raisin are fine, as are most berries. Be wary of commercial treats, such as papaya tablets that are promoted as good for helping prevent hair-ball blockages. Rabbit experts say this is not true, and they are nothing more than rabbit candy.

Here's an idea: treat yourself to a dozen roses. When the petals start to fade and fall, feed them to your bunny. Priscilla gobbles up rose petals like crazy. It's ok to give her rose leaves, too. Just be careful of the thorns.
