  1. The problem with any leisure waterways is that people (children of any age) seem to think that they are fun places to dump rubbish, stolen bikes and (for some reason which totally escapes me) shopping market trolleys.  You probably ran onto something in that category.

With a light, 30' boat, aluminium boat, cruising the canals at around maximum speed, we reckon that we use around a gallon of diesel a day (say an 8-hour day).  We find that there is a marked difference in fuel consumption at 3.5 mph against 2.5 mph, and when we get on the Thames, the fuel gauge fair whizzes round.

  2. A few years ago we spent a great two months on the broads looking after a mates barge while he went to france and we had a great time i dont know how many miles we covered but we were everywhere and we only spent £28:00 on diesel

    one and a half tankfulls.

  3. When sailing, you use no diesel at all but wind!

  4. Depends on the distance travelled. Never been on the broads, but cruised the Four Counties ring, about 6 years ago, for 2 weeks on £25 of diesel at an average of 29p a litre.

  5. It depends on the craft, length of cruise, type of skipper, which waterways cruised as some are highly tidal which means heading with or against strong currents.

Running aground should not use much fuel as you should gently reverse and slide back.

Boats on the Broads generally do not use much fuel.
