Who has been to Costa Rica in August? What were the weather and roads like?

well, it rains a lot. but most of the time only on the afternoons, from 2-3 to 5pm.

the roads here are bad but depends where or fro what.

but what ever happens just smile at the adventure

If your looking for a simple answer then here it is.

From June-December its really rainy even getting up to 200cm. And dont go fast on the roads if there wet they might have oil on them and youll crash. December-May is the dry season the best time to come down here its when all the tourists come down.

I lived in Costa Rica in August. I was in the Central Valley most of the time - so, San Jose / Alajuela area.  Everyone agrees its rainy, but there's specifics to that:  it's clear and about 72 degrees in the morning, and will gradually become overcast by noon. There will be a torrential downpour from about 2-5pm, and then it'll drizzle the rest of the night.  Just bring an umbrella - all the locals do - and it's not too bad, really.  If you're in the rainy season in a rainy part of the country, I wouldn't recommend jeans just because they take so long to dry and they WILL be wet. Just be aware that the locals don't wear shorts, so you'll stick out.

The weather on the coasts is largely sunny and warm - 80s or 90s. The weather in the highland mountains is cooler - 50s, 60s, but not quite as rainy.

The roads are awful and the drivers are worse - that's true everywhere in the nation. Costa Rica has the 2nd highest per capita traffic fatality rate in the world, and no wonder. I wouldn't drive in that country, and I lived there for six months. The bus system is marvelous. Figure it out and use it, or if you're a tourist and have a little extra cash to spend, splurge on one of the private, air-conditioned tourist rides. I think they're only about $20 (2004).

If you're a really seasoned driver and don't get the least bit nervous in the worst traffic the US can offer (imagine congested downtown traffic over a narrow two-lane mountain pass with potholes) you might be all right. But if you're the sort that gets a little nervous about merging, don't even think about it. Let someone else drive.

The roads in Costa Rica are terrible any time of year.  There are many potholes on the roads that are paved.  When you get out of the cities, especially when you are exploring the wild places, it pays to have a 4x4.  Roads and bridges will often get washed out, and you will often have mudslides.

You can expect rain, rain, rain and more rain from the end of April until the end of November.  However, Costa Rica has lots of micro-climates.  It may be raining buckets on the Caribbean coast and sunny on the Pacific.
