  1. Hi-

Tests are not always accurate. I had an ultrasound at EVERY PRE-NATAL VISIT and nothing showed up. We found out my daughter had down syndrome at birth. And there are lots of people whose tests showed not only Down syndrome, but other genetic problems, only to have the baby born completely healthy.

I know you are really upset right now. If your precious baby does have Down syndrome, please be assured that it's really NOT the most horrible diagnosis, or the end of the world. If you do have an amnio and get a positive diagnosis, you may be pressured to abort. You may be given outdated information. You should educate yourself with the truth about down syndrome, from parents who are living it before you make any life and death decisions.

  2. Please don't worry yourself. I had a close friend whose baby is almost 2 and they told her that and that he would be mentally retarded. He wasn't and is perfectly healthy. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Best wishes.

  3. I did not have a false positive, however my friend did, and her baby is healthy.  Is there a family history on yours or your partners side of Down Syndrome? If so then that brings the chances higher.  If not then try to stay calm.  If your baby does have down syndrome he/she will still be your baby.

  4. I didn't have a false positive, I had the opposite - a false negative, at about the same age u r now. I did everything right too, babies don't get DS because u do something wrong, it is just a totally random thing that happens at any age, because as much as u will hear that maternal age is the biggest factor, it really isn't. And it doesn't run in families either.

The blood tests aren't accurate at all as everyone else has already said, but now u r in a good position because they will look for soft markers in ur ultrasound a lot more thoroughly and be able to give u a pretty accurate result with out having to do anything invasive, unless u want to.

There's probably no point me saying ignore the result until u have further tests or scans, because I know that is impossible, I wouldn't be able to. But I think talk about it as much as u need to with friends and families to help work out ur feelings.

Down syndrome isn't the end of the world, and if ur child does have it, they will still be ur child who will bring u just as much love and happiness as any child. And if they r anything like my son (who is just like any other 3yr old -running around, being naughty, bashing up his little brother, and being sweet as pie, but just happens to have down syndrome), will probably be able to teach u a lot more about life then the average child. My son has given my life meaning and made me a very happy and proud mum.

Good luck, I hope everything goes to plan from here on :o)

  5. My mom had a test done that said my sister tested positive for spina bifida.  But my sister was just fine!  The lab got the work mixed up and the doctor had even started telling my mom to abort (which she would never have done).

  6. My sister had a few pos test for down syndrome with her son so they did a amnio and they were false. Hes perfect :) GL sweets

  7. I had false positives with 2 of my boys, I was scheduled for a level 2 ultra-sound and they determined that everything was ok with them.   I failed again with my last and youngest son, so we scheduled another ultra-sound ( I wasn't too worried) but during the U/S they found three soft markers for down syndrome (he had a thicker nuchal fold on the back of his neck, shorter long bones in his arms and legs and a congenital heart defect called av-canal) today he is a rambunctious  almost 5 yr old who just happens to have down syndrome. since he showed so many soft markers for DS I opted for an amnio to be certain. so I knew when I was pregnant with him that he would have DS it gave me time to learn everything I could about it and to prepare.  I know your scared right now, but wait until you have more tests. that afp test is so notorious for giving out false positives and causing needless worries...personally I think they should just do away with it.
