I am moving to ATL and going to Clark Atlanta next semester, and i am wondering if Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is having a line this fall. Or if not what about Spelman. Would the 2 schools have 1 chapter together since they share a campus? I would also like to know any other info one might have about them seeing as how i am new to the area. I guess i'm saying I dont know much about sororities and how they work. I just know they r pretty secretive.

  1. Okay I answered this yesterday but for some reason the answer never appeared. I'll answer your second question first:  No, Clark and Spelman do not share a chapter - Clark has a chapter Alpha Pi and Spelman has a different chapter Mu Pi and you would only be eligible to join the chapter at the school to which you are currently enrolled.

In terms of the first question I would suggest that you definitely take some time to visit our website (www.aka1908.com) and read up on what our membership requirements are.  Just as a hint, first semester freshman are not eligible for membership.

Other than that, get to school, enroll, do well, get to know chapter members on campus, participate in both your campus community and the larger community and take a moment to observe and learn the way that things work on your particular campus.

    Best of luck!

  2. There are certain requirements that must be fulfilled prior to rush, including a packet of information that must be acquired from the graduate adviser and completed.  And, as a transfer student you will probably not be allowed to participate in MIP at Clark in the fall.  Most schools require that you earn a certain amount of credits first.  (At my undergraduate school it was 30.)

Your best options are to get to know other young women who are also interested so that you can be a part of a 'network' to know what's going on and to contact the graduate adviser if you have questions.  Keep in mind that many HBCUs have a very competitive process and Clark has a cap on the number of women who can be initiated at any one time.  Being quiet may not be that helpful; and I wouldn't take being very pretty (your words) too seriously.

  3. I would say to check their websites or wait to see if they will be having any formals or information meetings. In order to be apart of the organization I know u will have to do community service, have a letter of recommendation and so forth before going to their informational meetings. Yes they are secretive. It would be better to check out the sorority and see how they operate things and then pledge. If you have anymore questions please feel free to contact me.

  4. You should look out for flyers or cards re: Pan-hel events on the two campuses. Normally, there is a promo period for orgs to appeal to new students.

Check with the school's Student Affairs Office for more info from their Greek advisors. Also, ask the Ladies sporting the pink and green.
