I read somewhere about a meteor shower that is supposed to peak the 2nd week of August and would like to know if it will be good viewing from the southeastern portion of America------and if so----what direction should be be looking? I know there should be a few out there now and want to look for a little while every night and morning up until they are all pretty much gone for good---prob. end of August---Thanks

  1. The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks on August 12 and 13.  There should be 50-80 meteors per hour.  The best place to watch is out in the country away from lights.  August 22 is the end of it,  If you're patient enough to wait, you should see some meteors now, and increasing until the Aug 12.

They'll be the same as in Illinois.

  2. The time to look is during the dark hours before dawn on Tuesday, August 12th.There should be plenty of meteors perhaps one or two every minute

The answer lies halfway up the southern sky: Jupiter and the gibbous Moon converge on August 11th and 12th for a close encounter in the constellation Sagittarius:  It's a grand sight visible even from light-polluted cities.
