  1. Greg was never a big wave surfer (according to Riding Giants, Step Into Liquid). I think he still lives in Crescent City, Cali where there's still a longboard classic held in his name. A pioneer, yes. Big waves in Crescent City? Naw.

Laird, Keaulana, Doerner - and all the guys in the book linked below. Made my stomach turn!

  2. I think you have to respect each for their talents and what they have accomplished.  Greg Noll was a big wave surfer and a pioneer of big wave riding, whoever says otherwise should recheck the facts.   Jeff Clark having the nads to paddle out and surf Maverick's by himself for so many years is proof he had courage.  But Laird and his crew have taken the sport to a whole different level.  Perhaps each would need to be measured on different scales of courage in their own right.  If you want to talk pure ability and ingenuity, got to give it to Laird hands down.

  3. Greg Noll.

  4. Good question.

Greg Noll was quite the big wave pioneer, much respect to our forefathers; but Laird is doing Jaws and the Millenium wave. Did you see that ride at T'eaupoo?

I think all these guys have courage mortals would desire, but I have to go Laird. Plus he's married to Gabriella Reese. Dude! That's a tough call, stay in bed or go surf. Ok, go surf.
