Or does it just depend on what kind of offense you are running?

  2. I think you did answer your own question lol!

But yes, it depends on the kind of offensive playbook you're running. If you wanted to pick up a quality slot receiver, you need to be looking at the smaller receivers (ie. Wes Welker of the Pats) as they can't compete downfield on the deep ball with some of the DBs.

Keep in mind that some schemes around the league run a 2 TE setup as well which would render your slot receiver useless.

You will sometimes find that the slot receiver could be the 3rd or 4th guy on the depth chart too. Obviously you want your number 1 and 2 guys playing downfield and being danger men (look at the Bengals as an example) then you would want options inside on a slant or hook play in case you playing a good secondary and they were shutting you down. This may also be where the TE comes in useful on your offense.

Also keep in mind that teams use the RB as a downfield threat (a la Saints) so again, the slot receiver could also line as a RB!

    Lol, hope I helped!

  3. Sounds like you answered your own question.   The only real difference between the two is the formation.  They are both recievers.
