  1. Definitive Technology has a very highly rated ceiling speaker. The Reference In-Ceiling Speaker (UIW RCS II) in fact all their inwall speakers are nice.

Sonance makes nice in wall / ceiling speakers too as does Niles.

I would get enough speakers to provide you with at least 5.1 surround sound.

That would be 5 inwall/ceiling and 1 or 2 subs.

I recommend you actually go to a specialty shop that sells Definitive, Niles or Sonance and talk to them. Do not go to Best Buy or Circuit City. You will not get the best advice from them.

Tell them your budget and they should be able to provide you with a the best solution within that budget. Even if they do not sell anything in your budget they will give you an alternative. They won't steer you wrong.

  2. Here are a few brands to consider.

    Niles

    Revel

    Boston Acoustics

    Polk Audio

    Cambridge Soundworks

    Jamo

    Klipsch

and many others, unfortunately. You will have to shop around and audition the speakers with material you are familiar with.

As for how many speakers are needed, usually only one per channel.

I would not recommend Bose, however. As always, for the money, you can do much better.

Don't forget, use good quality amplification.

And, whatever you do, DO NOT be duped by white van speaker guys. Google the term to find out more.

  3. that is like asking what are the best home speakers .. everyone has their own opinion. b&w / makes a decant one ,boston ,paradigm, pyle ,hope this helps

  4. For a good price vs quality ratio we sell Paradigm. The AMS series are very good and dont cost a lot (same price for a speakercraft but twice the quality). Any other speaker at the same or lower price point wont sound as good as these do. Ofcourse there are much better in-ceilings like the JM Labs or Linn speakers but then you are speaking about $1,000 per speaker. Guy mentioned B&W and those do sound good. However, I think that they are more expensive than the Paradigm AMS.

Do you want sorround sound for the movies and TV? Then you need a 5.1 Thats 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer. If you are not doing surround sound then 2 will do for that room.

  5. Pound for poound and inch per inch Bose makes the finest speakers for the purpose you described.
