1)  By modern standards, Richard II had the best claim to the throne.  He was the son of Edward III's eldest son Edward (aka the Black Prince), while Henry IV was son of Edward's third son, John of Gaunt.

2)  The joint sovereigns were William III and Mary II.

Richard had the better claim. He followed his paternal grandfather, Edward III, his father (also Edward) having pre-deceased his grandfather. He was the eldest son of the eldest son.

Edward III had a lot of sons - too many, really. Henry Bolingbroke was the eldest son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and was also a grandson of Edward III. Henry and Richard were first cousins, as their fathers were brothers.  There  sons of Edward III who lived into adulthood were Edward, Lionel, John, Edmund and Thomas, in that order.

Richard II reigned from the death of Edward III, in 1377 (aged 10 years) until he was deposed in 1399. Henry and Richard fell out - Henry was exiled for 10 years by Richard, and later Richard did not allow him to inherit his father's estates as of right.  Henry invaded in 1399, deposed Richard, and was proclaimed King. Richard died (probably killed off) the next year. Richard's son was disinherited as well.

"Who was the black Prince?"

The Black Prince was Edward, Prince of Wales. He was the son of Edward III, second husband of Joan of Kent, and father of RIchard II. He didn't become King because he died before his father.  It is thought that he wasn't known as the Black Prince during his life, but rather as Edward of Woodstock, after the palace near Oxford where he was born.

The Black Prince was the eldest son of Edward III and the father of Richard II.  He died before Edward, so the crown passed to Richard.  Henry was the son of John of Gaunt, one of the Black Prince's younger brothers.  As such, Henry had no claim to the throne while Richard was alive.  He only came to power by overthrowing and probably murdering Richard.

In 1689 the monarchs were William and Mary.
