  1. i know somehow this argument because i'm a filipino. in the argument of the Philippines, we say that this territory once belong to the Sultanate of Sulu. (sulu is part of the philippines) The history of this place is a long story because of British annexations of this territory.

for me, it really belong to the Philippines because history says it belongs to the Sultanate of Sulu. the argument of Malaysia in the territory started when the British gave and granted them the territory. see this article in wikipedia, i find it accurate enough

  2. Sabah is wholly Malaysian, by several decisions including a ruling of the International Court of Justice. It was recognised by the UN as part of Malaysia in the 1960s at the creation of the state of Malaysia.

Sabah and Sarawak were separate British territories prior to the "Federation of Malay" coming into being in the 1950s. Malay then changed its name to Malaysia. This are was contested by Indonesia in an un-declared war that Indonesia called the Konfrontasi.

The Sultan of Sulu (in the southern Philippines) made a deal with the British over Sabah but it is disputed still whether this deal was a relinquishing of sovereignty - on this aspect it is interesting to note that Malaysia still pays the Sultan 'rent' for Sabah.

The Philippines rejected the UN's commission recognising Sabah as part of Malaysia.

  3. Hi L.

The  majority of Filipinos everywhere are wondering what is this Sabah claim  all about? The Philippine history books, Malaysian's probably too, have not mentioned about the Philippines' stake on the northern part of the island of Borneo. On the other hand, the Malaysians are

furious that there is  a lot of attention now being focused on the.part of the Malaysian federation to which they believe was theirs since the British handed the territory in 1963.

    The lease started it all.

The Sultanate of Sulu was granted the territory as a prize for helping the Sultan of Brunei against his enemies and from then on that part of Borneo has been recognized as part of the Sultan of Sulu's sovereignty. In 1878, Baron Von Overbeck, an Austrian representing The British North Borneo

Co. and his partner British Alfred Dent, leased the territory known as "Sabah" . They agreed to  provide arms to the Sultan to resist the Spaniards.  5,000 Malaysian ringgits was to be annual rental based on the Mexican dollars value at that time or its equivalent in gold. This lease  continued until the independence and formation of the Malaysian federation in 1963 together with Singapore, Sarawak and Malaysia. Up to the present , the Malaysians have been continuing

the rental payment of 5,300 Malaysian ringgits - a 300 ringgits increased from original rent.

In  1962 during  President . Diosdado Macapagal's  the Philippines formally claimed Sabah back,  based on the Sultanate of Sulu heiPhilippines broke diplomatic relations with Malaysia. The sultan's heirs have given the Philippine government the authority to pursue the claim legally in international courts.

L, There  is plenty more to this story, for the best interpretation of this situation I would recommend you check the following site:
