  1. Marcelo Rios maybe :)

  2. Marat Safin.

  3. There have been many who reached #1 without even winning a grand slam title in the 52-week period that led up to them being #1, namely Marcleo Rios in 1998, who held the #1 spot for 6 weeks and never actually won a slam title ever.  Kim Clijsters in 2003, who held the #1 ranking for 12 non-consecutive weeks without winning a slam title up to that point (she eventually won the 2005 U.S. Open).  Amelie Mauresmo got to #1 for 5 weeks in 2004 without winning a slam title (she would go on to win the 2006 Australian and Wimbledon titles), and Lindsay Davenport ended the year at #1 in 2001,2004, and 2005, although her last slam title came in 2000 at the Australian Open.

  4. Actually, it was said by Patrick McEnroe, Mary Carillo, and Brad Gilbertthat if Nadal had beaten Federer and gone on to win the Australian open he would have been #1 and federer would have been number 2. Just letting you know and i would say marcelo rios

  5. Well there are a few players who have only been N0.1. for a week.

    Patrick Rafter

    Ille Nastase

    Sharipova

and even more who have only lasted 2 weeks.

Does that mean some-one better came along on their game went off the boil?

  6. I think Kafelnikov holds the record.  He lost in the first round of a tournament, but still became #1 and remained there for 6 weeks without winning a single match during that period.  He has lost 6 times.

  7. Let's see. You're asking which #1 player has had a worse year than Roger.

The answer is no one. Why? Because if any other #1 player had a worse year than Roger, he would have lost hte ranking a long time ago. But because Roger has such a huge lead at the top, he can hold onto the ranking for a long time. No other #1 has ever had such a commanding lead like Roger.

In this site above, it is clear that Sampras' worst year after becoming number 1 was 1996. He did not win a single masters or major until the US Open. But from the site below, he did not hold onto the number one ranking for the entire year 1996. He lost it to Muster and Agassi on various occasions.

  8. i think sampras or marat safin

  9. He's so good, that he was able to get a ton of points last year. I'm pissed that he had mono, but he shouldn't even have been playing the Australian Open! It is VERY dangerous. You never want your patients jogging or doing any sports until it is over. Most players take a leave of absence... and STILL Roger was hard to beat.  That says A LOT about him.

Roger is the best. He earned that spot, and he will keep it.
