No, it works on the principal of the metal contacting the magnetic base which in turn creates the connection and the burner heats, so if you were to put your hand on it there will be no heat, if you put a pot on it heats, they work faster than gas or electric burners and can be moved about even outdoors for use on the patio or deck.
