Who has volunteered for Relay for Life?

Hey folks,

I've just signed up to volunteer for Relay for Life (I'm in Ontario) and I'm kind of wondering what I'm getting myself into. I've volunteered at other fundraisers such as marathons and Run for the Cure, where I've marshalled, handed out water, stood at the finish line, etc.

I'm just kind of wondering what I'll be expected to do for this. I can't seem to find any kind of information on the website, and I don't really know anyone who's volunteered. I think I checked off stuff like pre-run set up, registration, cancer information tent, food distribution, and wherever help is needed, if that helps. I'm planning on staying for at least twelve hours.

What has your experience been like volunteering? What did you do? What did you like about it? What should I be prepared for? Is there anything else I should bring with me?

If you know anything about volunteering for this event, I'd love to hear it. :)

  2. Volunteering is great. It gives you the satisfaction of a life time. So don't worry about that......however you need to be prepared to work work work and work with out getting payed.

Some people think volunteering is easy and fun, but at the end of the day its not that much. However as i said before the satisfaction of your work which counts the most in these cases. good luck and don't give up on volunteering.

  3. I did, but tripped and broke my clavicle.

  4. We have organizational meetings in the months leading up to the event. Committees are formed to oversee all the aspects you mentioned.

Our local event is very well organized. If yours is as well, you should have a blast. It's a really cool, inspiring, worthwhile event.

I've captained a relay team for several years. It's a lot of work, but totally worth it.
