  1. Well, even though I do not own a conure (I prefer budgies and tiels, less noise) I have cared for many, day in and day out at my friend's rescue. Among the bird species I've cleaned up after, loved and got bitten by are: Patagonian, blue crown, nanday, sun and jenday. I have never seen the smaller, more quiet conures in our rescue (like the green cheek).

In general, all these birds are super messy (the sun LOVES to kick all the food out of his bowl), can cause temporary deafness if they yell while on your shoulder, and are constatly chewing. In general, suns are cuddly birds, and the one I care for is too.

Patagonian - The birds I have met where quiet (at the time, once in a new home they could be very loud). They were also very dependent and calm, unlike the smaller, more vividly colored birds. They are also very sweet and cuddly.

Blue crowned - I curently care for just one of these. He is the only one I've worked with. He was wild caught and had a broken wing (healed w/o a vet, so it sticks out funny). He is a very shy bird, but independant. Before we let him live in an aviary he could not stand living with people. The poor thing was a nervous wreck, but now with his flying ability he is much more confident and less shy. Not too messy.

Nanday - We have 3 in an aviary. One is a real devil, he would attack me when it was time to feed, (now he is lightly clipped) I think he's just possesive of his buddy. This bird's buddy has GOT to be the sweetest free-flight conure, he loves to preen me and clean my skin. The 3rd conure is stand off-ish, seems shy, like the blue crown. Messy.

Sun - he knows what he wants, I don't let him on my shoulder anymore b/c he won't step off it, PLUS he chews gaping holes in my t-shirt! But he is a real sweetie, likes rubs, but is extremely messy.

Jenday - Hates women. Messy, loves to chew. A real sweet heart towards men.

Overall, it is commitment for the next 30 years. If holes in your shirts, pellets on your floor, poopy water bowls, and earpeircing screams is what you look forward to every morning, then take the leap!

    Good Luck!

  2. my sun is a 5 year old cripple his head is a brilliant yellow lite red on the cheek wings on mine are a cobalt blue ,the body just the headbrilliantt yellow you ever saw the conquistadors named them when they saw a flock taking off they it was like watching the sun rise

  3. I have a sun conure and we love him.. They tend to be one owner birds and are biters... but I have controlled mine and he is doing better... They are very trainable and love lots of attention.... They are a good warning system... better than a watch dog or door bell... I think that you will love them...

  4. You should definitely research conures before you get one.  Sun Conures are notoriously loud and can be stubborn - you will need a lot of patience.

I have a Jenday Conure and he can be the cutest and cuddliest bird one day and the next be the loudest animal I have ever heard.  He is also particular about people who come to our house - some he is okay with and others he has to go back into his cage for.  Our bird also poops a lot, most times he will leave us to p**p - but not all the time.

Hope this helps, but keep researching.

  5. Sun Conures are loving, easy to train little birds, about twelve inches in length, including the tail, and live an average of 25 to 30 years.  As juveniles their coloring is a muted olive green, which serves as a defense mechanism in the wild.  When they mature, at approximately one year old, their coloring is a brilliant rainbow of yellow, red, orange, blue and green and are often considered the most beautiful of the Conures.

Sun Conures love attention and can develop some destructive behavior if they do not get the socialization they need. They have a piercing shriek which they will use to draw attention to themselves.  They like to be held and cuddled and talked to and they do enjoy the company of other birds.

Sun Conures can learn to talk, although they are limited and their voices are birdlike and squeaky. They amuse themselves by imitating unusual sounds, like the sounds of a doorbell, a telephone ring or an alarm clock ring.

    Hope this helped =)
