  1. Several innovations, aside from engines, were key: monocoque fuselage, cantilever mono-wing, enclosed cockpit, all metal, retractable landing gear.

Monocoque by Dipl. Ing. Tantzen in 1915: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_C.II

Cantilevered wing developed by Hugo Junkers.

Cantelivered wing monoplane enclosed cockpit Fokker F.2 airliner of 1919:

All metal monoplane with canteliver wing: US Navy Model ST torpedo plane of 1922, and the Air Sedan of 1923, both by Bill Stout, who later designed the Ford Trimotor:

Streamlined monoplane with cantelivered wing and monocoque fuselage, Lockheed Vega of 1927 by John Northrup and Gerrard Vultee (tho still of wood).

The Boeing Model 247 of 1933 is considered the first aircraft to fully incorporate advances such as enclosed cockpit, all-metal (anodized aluminum) semi-monocoque construction, a fully cantilevered wing, wing flaps, retractable landing gear, and later, controllable pitch propellor.

    Pressurized in 1938: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_307

Modern jet airliner: de Havilland Comet of 1949:

  2. There were hundreds if not thousands of gradual improvements over the last 100 years. No one person was responsible.

Look at any book on the history of the airplane.

    .

  3. Just visit /or call the air force museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. They have there the Aviation Hall of Fame where they Honor all of the engineers and aviators that help to contribute to better, faster, safer aircraft through their inventions.

  4. A whole load of people involved in a long line of developments and innovations.  Effectively, that makes your question rather meaningless, and that could explain your googling difficulties.

<<... since the wright brothers till now!?!?!?!>>

Gustav Weißkopf (aka Weisskopf and Whitehead) flew further two years earlier than the Wright brothers.  It's possible a Brazilian based in France managed the first powered flight somewhat earlier still.
