  1. In my humble opinion LaRussa is the smartest manager since Earl Weaver

thumbs down for an opinion? WOW? must be a LaRussa hater out there!

  2. I'd put this into two categories. Torre is a good manager because he won titles with a lot of talent. LaRussa won titles with talent, but nowhere near what Torre had (like the 2006 Cardinals).

  3. Tony La Russa cuz hes is an agressive yet smart coach.

  4. Tony LaRussa took the cardinals in 2006 to the world series, which i will (as a cardinals fan) admit that they had half the talent they should have needed to win.  And even this year, when they were picked to be last place in the division, has kept this team in the race, and is still in playoff contention.  When it comes to doing the most, with the least around you, you have to give it to LaRussa.  I think Torre is second behind him, hes actually a very underrated manager.

And to the moron who said he's only won a single world series, he's won two, on two different teams.  Not to mention he is one of only two managers to have a world series championship in both leagues, along with Sparkey Anderson.  And he took the cardinals to the playoffs every year but last year this entire decade.

  5. Bobby Cox.

I am a Phillies fan and I love Bobby anyway.

  6. I dont consider Torre a great manager. Before he got to NY he had 1 1st place finish in 15 or 16 years.

Did NY do well because of Torre or was Torre just the benefactor of a great team.. I think its more of the later. I think the Yanks would still have won with a different manager.

La Russa has had success with 3 different organizations

I like Bobby Cox because first he guided a young developing team in the Jays to a Division title than took over a bad Atl team then won 14 division titles.

  7. Bobby Cox, he won 14 straight division titles with a continuing revolving door of players. The man takes what he has and makes a winner.

Torre's success was BOUGHT by the Yankees. Look at all the talent that still remains on that team and they are just average.

LaRussa has had a few good years, but overall I never saw him as anything special

By the way Im a Phillies fan, we have to deal with Charlie Maunel, so all three of them sound good to me !

  8. La Russa, in that he has done the most with the least.

  9. Tony LaRussa is the south end of a north bound horse. The answer is Bobby Cox...........Cox once took out Andrew Jones in the middle of an inning because he loafed in the outfield. Ramirez still hasn't cut his hair. I guarantee you if Manny Ramirez had been traded to the Braves, those dred locks would have been cut by now, or he'd be sitting on the pine.

  10. I don't care what anybody says, but 14 straight division titles is a great accomplishment. With the WC now it's easier to get in the post season and win a WS with a lot of luck and hot bats or pitching. But to consistently win the division over 162 games for 14 years is a greater feat. Winning WS is what it's about but Bobby has the 14 straight division titles plus he has a WS victory.

  11. 1.  Tony La Russa

    2.  Bobby Cox

    3   Joe Torre

  12. Bobby Cox. His run of titles was amazing. Also I don't think I have ever heard a player say they didn't enjoy playing for his team.

  13. C'mon all these answers are dumb. Who's the manager that won 3 straight World Series? Who Went to the WS 6 times in 8 years? Who sent in history one of the best dynasties in baseball? Joe Torre, and I'm not even a Yankee fan. Tony La Russa is overated, this guy acts like he's one of the best when he only one a single WS in the last 20 years of managing.

  14. In their career,

    Torre

    Cox

    La Russa

Cox and La Russa make a close 2nd and 3rd.

  15. Are those the only/top three? I think Terry Francona and Mike Scioscia are the two best Managers in the game right now. Francona for his two World Series wins in four years. Scioscia is just the best in game manager. you never know what is coming at you next. He always finds a way to out manage the other guy.

For your three. LaRussa is overrated. Torre won 4 titles with great teams. But to me, Cox is the best in game manager of the three. My favorite thing I ever learned from him for coaching was, after a defensive stoppage in play (visit to the mound,argument...) you do something out of character immediately on offense. It catches the defense and other Manager off guard as they are still thinking about the last play.

  16. Tony La Russa because he has never had a team of his in last place.

Joe Torre got fired and Bobby Cox gets ejected to many times.

  17. Sweet Lou Piniella!!!!!

  18. Tony La Russa is the better manager. With the Yankees in the mid 90's, Torre was put in a situation where any manager would've succeeded. Bobby Cox was given a large amount of talent as well with the Braves in the 1990's. Even when dealing with massive injuries to star players and low talent teams, Tony La Russa always manages to mentor a great group of young players and mold them into a competitive team year after year. It's unfortunate that the third best team in the national league this year (the cards) will probably not make the playoffs.

  19. I'd say LaRussa. He's done the most with the least. Yes, the Braves had an ever-changing roster, but it doesn't take too much to win when your rotation has Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz all in their primes, and a GM who manages to keep getting talent to replace talent. He never won with a team that surprised you by winning. As for Torre, well, that goes without saying that the Yankees during his tenure never lacked for having a great team.

  20. Tony La Russa is definitely the best. I believe Bobby Cox is either at the record, or very close, for most times bring thrown out. His 14 in a row was because the rest of the division was under preforming most of the time (this is coming from a Mets fan). Joe Torre is overrated, he had a such a good team it was impossible to not do well, and he still got fired.

  21. Joe Torre because he gets the most out of the talent he has.  Cox has one ring and La Russa two, and with the talent they've had each should at least have matched Torre's four by now.
