  2. Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. His aids tied a bear to a tree on a hunting trip so he could shoot it, but he wouldn't shoot it; hence the nickname "Teddybear." 6 months later someone came up with the idea of the teddybear . . . the rest is history.

Teddy Roosevelt, was a conservationist whose interests were of land preservation by way of establishing a national park and forestry service.  As the story goes, he was touring what is now Yellow Stone National Park after a major fire.  In a burned tree, he found a bear cub and named him "Smokey the Bear."  A shop keeper in New York, stuck a teddy bear in his shop window, adorned it with glasses and a hat and named it "Teddy."
