  2. That's tricky.  Agriculture has been pursued in the area round Utah since something like a couple thousand years ago, if I remember correctly, and maize -the staple crop- was developed earlier in South America.  By some route or other maize found its way north.

    Whether the ancestral Utes practiced some form of agriculture before turning up in the area, whenever that quite was, is something I don't know.  Clear is that they had knowledge of it before the Spanish turned up.
