How do they know mosquito scare or sensetive to smoke like this?

If you have ever sat around a campfire at night you will have noticed that the smoke tends to repel mosquitoes and other insects. People have known about this for thousands of years. More recently people have experimented with burning different kinds of substances to see if they can find one that does not bother people but that will repel insects. The mosquito coil is an example of the result of such research.
