Very popular in El Salvador and Honduras but originated in El Salvador.  They love pupusas so much that the country has declared Nov. 13th  "National Pupusa Day".

The why of it is probably because it was a basic staple and cheap as well and I guess it just became popular. I love the ones with beans and cheese. The tortillas are somewhat like a Mexican gordita.
