Smoking has been around for thousands or years. You hear all the reasons why people smoke. i.e peer pressure and other stuff. But why did people invent smoking? Did they think it would do anything? I don't just mean tobacco i mean anything. What made man take up a leaf put it in a pipe burn it and inhale the smoke?

  1. This is a good question. This question has a funny answer. Many thousands of years ago, kings and queens would hire men called 'explorers' to sail with huge ships to places that have never been explored before. One explorer (who's name i forgot) found Native Americans smoking and they showed him how. So to answer your question the Native Americans 'invented' smoking. But to finish my story (the funny but sad part) the explorer to some smokes back to his country and everyone gathered around him to see what he brought back. He then started smoking some leaves and he breathed the smoke out of his nose and everyone thought he was the devil so he got hung. Poor guy lol. I guess smoking really does kill you...

  2. Smoking appears to have developed independently in more than one place. The indians were the first to smoke tobacco, while old world cultures such as the ancient Egyptians smoked marijuana.

In any case, it would first have happened by accident. Grog threw leaves on fire, Grog felt good, Grog went out of way to burn leaves. Grog eventully figured out how to burn leaves in pipe to maximize effect. I believe that in South American some Indian tribes merely use a hollow tube to suck up the smoke from a fire; perhaps that was intermediate to the development of the pipe.

  3. american indians are known the first to smoke in history. who knows why they started? according to a theory tea was discovered when a leaf fell in a man's glass.he liked the taste and story goes on. maybe they tried to set a fire with dry leaf but they sniffed and got addicted :)

  4. I have no idea but maybe somebody realized that they liked breathing in smoke from a fire and decided to make a smaller fire that they could easily inhale.. they found the things that are good to smoke by experimentation?

  5. LOL

Sir Walter Raleigh took the tobacco back to England....and he did later fall out of favour, but I don't think it was anything to do with smoking.....

Maybe he upset his Queen and she said "off with his head"

  6. Who invented smoking ?

    Im guessing indians did.

    For what reasons?

Because of it's relaxation effect, and it makes you feel good.

  7. Native American Indians...smoke signals to communicate, fire to cook food and for warmth, help them 'see' by smoking leaves from plants that were hallucinogenics.

  8. That's kind of like asking why we do anything.  At some point we figured out fire, how to make hunting tools, and the wheel.  Now look at all the c**p we did.  It is possible that at some point certain herbs, etc. were ingested or used as medicinal/recreational purposes.  At some point, it was realized that a greater affect could be achived by inhaling.  I figure it was probably a mixture of curiosity and accident.

  9. You might want to ask a native American.
