  3. The first vehicle to move under its own power for which there is a record was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769

  4. Perhaps, the first self-propelled land vehicle with an engine was built in the year 1796 by a Frenchman called "Nicohlas Cughot". It was a cumbersome three-wheeled cart with a steam engine & an enormous boiler. It could travel 3 miles per hour & needed to be refueled every 15 miles! In 1789, "Oliver Evans", an American got the first United States patent for his self propelled four-wheeled wagon which could operate either on land or in the water. For nearly eight decades thereafter, further experimentations in this respect resulted in mostly steam driven vehicles except a few which were electrically driven & carried large batteries. In the year 1880, development of internal combustion engine & pneumatic, or air-filled tyre resulted in the modern automobiles. In the year 1887, a German called "Gottlieb Daimler" put the first petrol-powered car on the road. In the United States, two brothers, Frank & Charles Duryea, built the first successful American petrol automobile in the year 1892. They described their vehicle as "a horseless buggy". All the early American vehicles that followed were of similar designs. When automobiles began to run successfully, attempts were made to make them comfortable & stronger. Car-makers realised that flimsy construction of buggies was not suitable for use in automobiles. Gradually, engines were removed from under the seats & placed in the front. Stronger wheels replaced the spindly bicycle wheels. Steering wheels replaced "tillers". Steel was used instead of wood to make stronger frames & in this way our modern automobile emerged.
