  1. The first  submarine to sink a ship was the CSA Hunley, constructed during the civil war. It was funded by a consortium of southern gentlemen. Sister sub to the Hunley was the Pioneer, which was scuttled in Lake Pontchartrain, La., rather allow it to fall into federal hands. The Hunley sank the USS Housatonic about 1865 in Charleston Harbor. The Hunley  subsequently sunk during the attack.

  2. as far as the modern.....ie since 1910 sub is concerned, Holland is the correct answer      his first designs were bought by the Brits, and then copied by the Germans; he took his business to the US and founded a company called Electric Boat, which is still building subs for the US today

  3. The U in U boat is a German referance for Unterseeboot. The Germans waited for the perfection of the Diesel engine before embarking on a long line of U boats which played such an important role in the First and Second World Wars.

About 17 designs of submarines have been recorded between 1578 and 1763. You'll need some more research. Among those early pioneers  of submarine design were David Bushnell and Robert Fulton.

The first really workable design...which was accepted by the US Navy belongs to Irish born American J.P.Holland(1840-1914). The first 5 submarines built in Britian were also of his design. They displaced 105 tons and had petrol(gas) driven engines.

  4. It was invented by a man named Cornelius van Drebbel.

The submarine was invented in 1624.

    =)

  5. The first successful submarines were invented by the Confederate States of America (The South) during the American Civil War.  Check out the link, below...

  6. The first submersible with reliable information on its construction was built in 1620 by Cornelius Jacobszoon Drebbel, a Dutchman in the service of James I of England. It was built to the standards of the design outlined by English mathematician William Bourne, the inventor of the submarine. It was propelled by means of oars. The precise nature of the submarine type is a matter of some controversy; some claim that it was merely a bell towed by a boat. Two improved types were tested in the Thames between 1620 and 1624. In 2002 a two-man version of Drebbel's design was built for the BBC TV programme Building the Impossible by Mark Edwards, and successfully rowed under water at Dorney Lake, Eton.

Though the first submersible vehicles were tools for exploring under water, it did not take long for inventors to recognize their military potential. The strategic advantages of submarines were set out by Bishop John Wilkins of Chester, England, in Mathematicall Magick in 1648.
