  1. The term "crossover switch" refers to a device used in telephone plant wiring or in electric utility wiring, to provide a way to switch large numbers of circuits from one source to another without disrupting operations.

    A railroad crossover means a diagonal track that connects two parallel tracks and allows a train to cross over from one track to the other using the two switches at the ends of the crossover track.

    Crossovers have been part of railroad track alignment from the beginning, and the origin of the idea is lost in the recesses of history.  No specific "inventor" can be identified.
