Who invented the dummy (pacifier)?

I was just wondering who invented the pacifier as i cant find anything on the internet that helps in the slightest! I would like to know who invented, when and how they came up with the idea (if possible) :D

The real inventor would be whoever decided to put thumbs on baby's hands.

Amazing how many children prefer it to the pacifier.
