    Belisha beacons were invented in the UK in 1934 and are now used extensively in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

    A Belisha beacon consists of a white-and-black striped pole with a plastic orange globe the size of a soccer ball at the top.

    This beacon is placed at each end of the crosswalk and flashes continuously.
