The pencil was first documented in 1565 by Conrad Gesner.  The rubber eraser was invented by Magellan. A man named Lipman had the great idea of putting the eraser on the pencil.

the story i was told was these 2 shepards were arguing about their sheep coz they shared a feild and didn't know whoses sheep was whose, so they found a rock in a mountain that marked things (graphite) and cut a bit out and used it to mark one of the mens sheep.

this was also the start of those coloured markings on sheep.

you can see the hole they used to get graphite out of (i think in england somewhere) it is very small and you can just about crawl into it but your bum will hang out a little.
