  1. Henry Coanda is the real answer,in 1910 at the International Aeronautic Salon in Paris, at Issy-les-Moulineaux airport near Paris, he presented the first jet powered aircraft, called Coanda-10 (which he had designed and built in engineer Gianni Caproni’s workshop). The innovation this new flying device brought was that is used a four-cylinder piston engine to power a compressor, which fed two burners for thrust, instead using a propeller. Unfortunately, the jet wasn’t too stable and Coanda not a very experienced pilot, so he lost control of the device, which hit a wall near the taking off grounds and burst into fire. Coanda managed to jump out of the jet before this happened and he only suffered a couple of minor injuries. However, neither the public, nor the scientific world was too interested in his innovation and he abandoned it for some time. Gustave Eiffel, the constructor of the Eiffel Tower and of the Statue of Liberty said about the 24 year old Henri Coanda that he was born 50 years earlier than he should have.  But is from Romania and u will say that is the true same with TRAIAN VUIA how made the very first airplane, which was completely built in December 1905,and near Paris, he test his airplane, the first experiments started in 1905, at first he used the machine only as a car, without the wings mounted on it, so he could gather experience in driving it, then on March 18, 1906 "Vuia I" was set to take off. He accelerated and after about 50 meters, the plane left the soil and flew at about one meter in height for about 12 meters then the propeller stopped and the aircraft landed. Many newspapers in France, the US, and the United Kingdom wrote about the first man to fly with a heavier-than-air machine with their own takeoff systems, propulsion units and landing gear. The thing that has been emphasized ever since about Vuia's achievement, is that his machine was able to take off on a flat surface "only by on-board means", without any "outside assistance ", be it an incline, rails, a catapult, etc. However there was, and is, much disagreement over precise definition of the "first" airplane, the Wright brother invented a glider and then they add on it a engine to it , so fack off!!!!!!!!!!!
go and read about the true!!!! same whit Nicolae Paulescu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Paulescu

  2. Ohains work in Germany was based on the Whittle patents.  Whittle invented the jet engine.  The first jet as we know it today was run in 1937 by Whittle. Ohain's put his engine in a plane in 1939 which flew for a few minutes and was a disappointment and cannot be class as a proper plane.

British jet technology was ahead of the Germans in WW2. The Germans got an operational plane, Me262, out a few week before the British and in greater numbers. However it was far from developed.  British jet engines would run for 150 hours between "overhauls", compared to German engines which lasted only 10-20 hours before "burning out", and written off.  British jets had twice the power-to-weight ratio and half the specific fuel consumption.  German planes would stall if the throttles were opened too fast and frequently burned out in flight.  German jets were rushed out underdeveloped as they were desperate at that stage of the war.  The Germans were the first to get them into planes, however the British jet engines were way ahead.
