  1. It was discovered by accident by Dr. Percy Spencer of Raytheon corp back in the late '40's

  2. Cooking food with microwaves was discovered by Percy Spencer while building magnetrons for radar sets at Raytheon.

He was working on an active radar set when he noticed that a peanut chocolate bar he had in his pocket started to melt. The radar had melted his candy bar with microwaves.

Spencer created a high density electromagnetic field by feeding microwave power into a metal box which it had no way to escape. When food was placed in the box with the microwave energy, the temperature of the food rose rapidly.

    Spencer's U.S. patent was filed in 1945.

  3. An elderly chap by the name of Johnny Microwave

  4. This invention is credited to Percy L. Spencer, a World War II hero and electronics genius. One day he was in a laboratory and stopped in front of a magnetron, the power tube that drives a radar set. He then noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted in the tube's presence. He experimented with unpopped popcorn, and sure enough the magnetron "heated" the corn to popping, spurring his company, Raytheon, to develop the first microwave oven. It reportedly weighed 750 pounds, was more than 5 feet tall, and didn't work all that well. It took decades to perfect the microwave oven into the useful household appliance we know today.
