  2. Christopher Scholes in 1875.

    The original typewriters would have their "arms" lock together if you typed too fast.  Christopher separated the most common keys to opposite ends of the keyboard in an attempt to prevent them from locking together so often.

  4. Well, you could read the article that the third person links to...it does explain it in great detail.  However, if you want the jist of it:

    Way back when type writers were made, they designed the keyboard so that the weakest fingers were responsible for the most popular letters, therefore, people couldn't type faster than the typewritter could keep up with.

    (Because if you typed fast enough, two of the keys would come out at the same time and neither letter would type)

I dont know who designed the layout of a keyboard but if you look at the way the keys are set up and most common words, you will see that alot of words are set up to so that keys are near each other for different words such as A and E are close because they are usually in words togeather and U I O are also near for the same reasons
