  1. Like John said, grappling has been around pretty much since the beginning of Civilization.

In Greek and Rome, it was very popular, throughout the world there are folkstyle wrestling arts that emphasize submissions, and leg catching, shots, takedowns, etc.

It has been around for a long, long time. So you can't really tie it to any one art, or group of people. Different historians have different takes.

Some claim that all Martial Arts develop from Greek Pankration, and it spread through Alexander's conquering, went into Turkey and India, and from there developed into it's own creature, and then travelling folks from India introduced it to the CHinese, and along with their own regional arts, they started refining it, and that through those same channels it made it's way to Okinowa, and Japan...

Tons of speculation, every country wants to claim it's origin, but Martial Arts have been around for a while, and grappling just as long.

  3. Here's a link for a greater understanding of all "combat" http://www.westlord.com/jujitsu/eng-hist... this page is a long read, but well worth it.  The facts and history stated on that page can give and real "insight" on where all other arts came from.  Without "Feudal Japan" the world may still be in the dark about a "better self-defense".

  4. My friend you will probably have to look further back than that.  There is nothing new under the sun.  Consider that Sumo and many other forms of wrestling predate those two.  In fact ancient sumo was nothing like the sport we know today.  Often the matches ended in death.  Wrestling is the oldest martial art...it probably even predates rock throwing so who knows really.  India, Greece, Persia, China, and just about everybody else had indigenous forms of wrestling dating eons back.  Who knows who did what first?
