Why they did it is one of two possible answers 1. they lived in a jungle environment and didn't want stickers and thorns in their... you know and 2. God told them to not be naked

What they were made of...leaves and vines (the bible says fig leaves but I find that hard to believe)

One of the pleasures derived from this forum is the contemplation of things that had never occurred to you.  This is one. I was intrigued and went to the web.  SPAM! So I have to think for myself. We obviously started off wearing nothing at all.  What caused us to start hiding our naughty bits, I don't know. But our naughty bits tend to be a bit sensitive, so whatever we chose to hide them with was probably comfortable and readily washable. Then came outer garments - probably for warmth.  But these heavier materials were probably rougher and less washable, so we kept what we had been comfortable with before and serendipitously discovered the benefits of "layering."

The male cosmetic of  the "codpiece" came and went. The much later invention of the female brassiere came and stayed.

Underwear came about when people started wearing fine clothing. rather than staining them and having to really clean them or discard them, they wore these undergarments. It really began after the Black Death, but only with the gentry. the lower classes did not really start wearing underwear until the 1800s or thereabouts
