  1. Are you referring to Raine Spencer, daughter of Barbara Cartland, Diana's stepmother?Earl Johnny Spencer made Raine his second wife;Raine was  the much hated step-mother,not at all popular with the Spencer children;they thought her "too grand."

Diana's mother, Frances Shand-Kydd was Countess Spencer before her divorce. And Diana's brother, Charles is now Earl Spencer;perhaps it referred to his wife, which would make her a sister-in-law.

  2. Current Countess Spencer is married to Diana's brother so is sister in law.  Or, was, rather.

The one who married her father (after Diana's mother left) was Diana's step mother.

  3. As to the Countess Spencer who testified recently at the inquest upon Lady Diana's death, she is Diana's stepmother and Barbara Cartland's daughter.  Shortly after the death of the Earl of Spencer in 1992, Raine Spencer married the French Count Jean Francois de Chambrun, a descendant of the Marquis de Lafayette, although the British press still refers to her as the Countess Spencer, a title she lost when she married de Chambrun.

The Lady in question has been styled the Countess Spencer, the Dowager Countess Spencer, and the Countess de Chambrun, although her stepchildren referred to her as "Acid Raine".  She is incidentally a member of the board of directors of Harrod's.

  4. The title "Countess Spencer" is a courtsey title bestowed on the wife of the Earl Spencer. Any daughters of an Earl would be titled as a "Lady."

Lady Diana Spencer is the descendant of John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer (December 19, 1734 – October 31, 1783). Therefore, the first "Countess Spencer" would have been Margaret Poyntz. Any female with the title "Countess Spencer" would have been Diana's own mother, step-mother, and sister-in-law (her brother Charles Spencer has inherited the title as the "9th Earl Spencer." This also includes any grand and great-grand mothers from the paternal side as well (since the title of Earl Spencer is only carried from the male line).

  5. sister-in-law (present Earl's present wife)

    step-mother (previous earl's widow)

  6. Depends which Countess Spencer you are talking about. Earl Spencer's wife is always Countess Spencer. The current Earl is Diana's brother so his wife (although I think he is divorced now) would have been Diana's sister-in-law. The late Earl Spencer was Diana's father and his first wife, Frances, was her mother. His second wife, Raine, was obviously Diana's step mother.

  7. The parents of Diana, Princess of Wales separated and    divorced whilst she was a child. Subsequently, Lord Spencer married again which made Raine the Countess of Spencer therefore she is stepmother to Diana
