Do you mean as in what is the Doctors name or what the doctor is ?

Ether way The doctor is a time lord from the planet gailfray (sp??)  he is the last of the time lords who survived the time war against daleks.  He is basically "immortal" due to his ability regenerate if critically injured.

as for does he have a true name besides the doctor yes he does but we do not find out what it is only that he has one

The "Who" part came from a scene where somebody refers to him as "The Doctor" and the other character asks, "Doctor Who?".

I'm happy it's getting so big, I remember my father showing me all of his tapes on Beta when I was growing up of the old Who and how bad the Daleks scared me. The new seasons are awesome! XD
