Quote (Williams talking about the engine freeze rule bending):

"It is a sensitive subject," admitted Williams. "This is purely anecdotal, second or even third hand, but there is a story that one of the Red Bull drivers jumped out of his Renault car and drove the Ferrari car and said, 'bloody h**l!' True or false, I don't know. And that is not to point the figure at Ferrari. "

Who is he talking about?

  1. he meant to say that- one of the rebull drivers jumped out of his renault powered redubull and maybe tested the ferrari f2008 for couple of laps....and he felt an huge difference....maybe the person hes talking abt is most probably Sebastine Vettel....ferrari are keen on recruiting him...and i wont be surprised to see him driving a ferrari in 2010....filling the place of Kimi if he retires...as ferrari's had said this once before that they are not too keen on having alonso

or maybe frank meant tht redbulls may have tested their car with ferrari engines recently(for the current season they run on renault engines)...and the driver may have felt an lot of diference......the person must be 'Beumi' the RBR test driver....

  2. It is most likely one the Red Bull development stable, such as Buemi or Hartley (most likely Hartley who has tested both the RBR and the Toro Rosso cars)... the STR car is the Ferrari one definitely, as we all know the secrecy and exclusivity Ferrari place around their F1 outfit (they've had the same test drivers, Gene and Badoer, for years and years)

I think there certainly has been tinkering on the engines, although I wouldn't say it is cheating given the restrictions the FIA have put in place (coupled with the random engine tests they have started), it is most likely bending of the rules...finding parts that need improving and requesting allowance from the FIA...also greater understanding of the ECU (different engine maps and the like) and development in cooling and exhaust systems can unlock those precious few more horsepower teams could crave...

  3. A later paragraph gives the answer:

"I think some people are braver than others, saying, 'this has gone wrong and I need to change it.' No one is cheating, but some people are better at bending the rules and knowing where to stop bending, than people who would never dream of even trying to squeeze something."

Ferrari have obviously improved their engine compared to Renault, and the RB driver in question was shocked at the difference.

  4. Well it must be either Dc or Webber, but just one thought did occur to me and that is that Frank means the the Red Bull driver had driven the Toro Rosso car and not an F2008 and was surprised by the extra power from the Ferrari engine in what was essentially the same package.
