  2. Perhaps your question should be posted in the RELIGIOUS threads. This is the Royalty threads where questions dealing with the monarchy, past and present are posted.

The study of all things biblical is a tricky subject since the bible's job was to teach lessons,in the New Testament's case the lessons of Jesus and Christianity. The writers are not always clear about who is who, because their job is to teach about a faith that is more important than the cast of characters.Gaius and Caius are interchangeable names.Gaius was in Corinth. But there were many men of such nomenclature.

  3. Gaius is another spelling of Caius:

Three possibilities (scholars don't know which one)

    Caius in Macedonia (Acts 19:29)

    Caius in Corinth (Romans 16:23)

    Caius in Derbe (Acts 20:4)

  4. The New American Bible, which has excellent footnotes, offers the following possible identity of Gaius:  "Gaius, although influential, does not seem to have had an office in the community.  He is referred to an one of the elder's spiritual children (v. 4); whether this means he was converted by the elder, or simply that he accepted the elder's leadership, is uncertain.  Gaius is called beloved, a frequent form of address for fellow Christians in New Testament epistolary literature."

Under the endnotes for New International Version of the Bible, "Wesley's Notes" indicates that Gaius was probably the "Caius of Corinth" mentioned in Romans 16:23.   If so, he was removed from Achia into Asia, or else John sent his letter to Corinth.

However, since Gaius (or Caius) was a very common name in the Roman Empire, New Testament scholars simply don't know if the Gaius in 3 John: 1 is the Gaius in Acts 9: 10, 20: 4, 1 Corinthians 1: 4, or Romans 16: 20.
