Why is it called A "Jefferies tube"?

  1. Oddly enough, the term originated with Star Trek; it was an inside joke (pardon the expression) named after Matt Jefferies who did the original design.  In a strange case of life imitating art, the Air Force Space Command now uses the term as well.
