  1. Napoleon was a general during the French Revolution, First Consul during the consulate, Emperor of the first French Empire, protector of the Confederation of the Rhine, King of Italy, Mediator of the Swiss and briefly Emperor of Elba. He did not achieve his goals just through fighting battles. Although he was First Consul and later Emperor he still had to deal with political opposition and did not always get his way. That said he did achieve a lot of his power through wars, although as ironic as it is he did not start most of them. Generally a coalition of countries would attack France and its allies and Napoleon would defeat the coalition and impose some kind of punishments on the members of it. These punishments would weaken the coalition members and increase Napoleon and his allie's power. So yes he did achieve by fights but he also achieved by his political skills and his ability to command the loyalty of the people.
