  1. For the democratic party, the candidates have to win delegates that will vote for them at the party's convention in August. They win delegates by winning primary election which are held throughought the first half of the year. There are also "superdelegates" which are party officials and such that get to vote however they want.

Right now, almost all the primaries are done, and Barack Obama is just about to have enough delegates to win over Hillary Clinton who is ~100 delegates (out of 4000 or so) behind him. Now here's the thing about Michigan and Florida. In 2007, the Democratic party explicitly told the elections offices in those states that if they moved their primaries from Feb 5 to Jan 29, that their delegates WOULD NOT COUNT. So being idiots, they moved the primaries up anyways. Hillary Clinton won both states big because she campaigned in them whereas Obama did not. Plus, Obama wasn't even on the Ballot in Florida. Now those states and Clinton are whining about the votes not counting.

  2. It's Obama and Hillary.  They're fighting about MI and FL because they set their primaries too early, so they originally weren't going to count.  Now, somehow they are, and the top Dems aren't happy about it, so they're deciding what's going to happen now...it doesn't make sense to me either. =)

  3. One person, one vote.  No "delegates." No problems.
