Who is Premier League’s Finest Striker? – Part 1
The two goal haul by Fernando Torres against Chelsea has again brought up the discussion as to who is the finest striker in the Premier League. There is an array of talent available upfront.
Torres, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez are the obvious choices. But then there are the likes of Darren Bent, who has been immensely consistent. Tottenham pair of Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch are also two of the Englishmen who have been performing
consistently. Then there is a certain Robin van Persie, another class act even though he hardly plays. The 32 million pound stylish Dimitar Berbatov is another talent that Premier League is blessed with.
It’s a debate that has been going on and will continue so in the future as well. This season has been a strange one in some ways but Bettor.com has decided to look at certain players' over-all abilities and judge them against our criteria.
This criterion consists of 6 vital ingredients needed to be a top striker. Finishing, Team work, Pace, Fitness, Discipline and Big match credentials and then we will mark each one of them out of 10.
The players we have selected to compete for the crown of Premier League’s finest include Liverpool’s Fernando Torres, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez.
Here we go....
FINISHING
Torres – Most at home when it comes down to slotting the ball into the back of the net. Inside the box, you can put your house on him to score. As cool as you like, the Spaniard makes finishing look too easy.
He is comfortable with either foot and is superb in the air. He has hammered quite a few from outside the box as well. He is simply the best when it comes down to pure finishing.
9/10
Drogba – Unlike Torres, Drogba took his time to settle in England but he has certainly become a force to reckon with in front of the goal. He is strong in the air and would find the back of the net more often
than not, may be not as clinical as Torres but you don’t want to give him too many opportunities.
8.5/10
Rooney – He has always had goal droughts in his career but it was last season when he finally shone. He is not your typical forward who will score goals from inside the box but is always a threat. He has fearsome
shots and most of his shots are on target. If he can just learn to get into dangerous positions more often, he might become as clinical as Torres.
8/10
Carlos Tevez – Work ethic is what he had been known for until the start of this season. He has added goals to his game and improved considerably on his finishing. He is always going to create chances for himself
but if he improves his finishing, he might just end up as the top scorer in this campaign.
7.5/10
TEAM WORK
Torres – This is one area where he will lose ground against his competitors. In fact, it’s the system that Liverpool play which does not allow him to come back and defend. Nevertheless, he does work his socks
off higher up the pitch. 7.5/10
Drogba – He is often Chelsea’s main defender at set pieces and is always causing opposition all sorts of problems. However, he can cut a frustrated figure when things are not going his way.
8/10
Rooney – Probably his best asset. Wayne Rooney is often criticised for over working and needlessly coming back to help his team mates. His work rate is always admirable and is one reason why Manchester United
fans adore him so much. 9/10
Tevez – Like Rooney, his work ethic is second to none and probably his biggest asset as well. Tevez at times seems to run around the park like a headless chicken but is probably the most annoying striker, for
a defender, currently in this league. 9/10
