  1. my EICAS is one.

  2. An engineer is always there besides the 2 pilots who takes care of mechanical functioning of the airplane. His main role is when there is some onboard mechanical problem.

  3. A vanishing breed. More and more of the big jets are only requiring a 2 man crew as they are so computerized and automated.

  4. A flight engineer used to be the third person on the flight deck of a large airplane (commercial or military), he or she is a second officer, who sits at the engineer's panel behind the two pilots.

he or she monitors all of the aircraft's systems and fuel states as well as engines, fuel and hydraulics. the person also did calculations for navigation, takeoff, landing and emergencies.

since 1980s, most flight engineers were slowly phased out and all commercial aircraft, nowadays commercial aircraft, large or small, only had a two man crew, the captain and the first officer, who acted as co-pilot.  the flight engineer's duty is divided among the two remaining crewmen. ( and the computers)

and no, he is not an aircraft maintenance engineer. he does not have the same qualifications as the a aircraft maintenance engineer either.

  5. they are pretty much extinct...... unless ur flying for some junk freight company

  6. The Flight Engineer had to be qualified in repair and maintenance of the aircraft systems.  He was responsible for ultimate weight and balance and calculated, V1 Vr and Vrot.  He was also responsible for calculating optimum altitude and power settings while simultaneously tracking best 3 engine altitude in the event of failure.

If there was an unusual indication in flight it was his responsibility to determine if the engine should be shut down.  If there was a bleed duct failure he had to determine the appropriate bypass.  In the C-124 and B-36 they were often required to crawl out in the wings for in-flight maintenance.

He monitored fuel flow and directed tank usage.  In the event of any system failure in flight he was responsible for alternative solutions.  On the ground in remote operation lhe was responsible for ground handling and maintenance of the Aircraft.

In the Military the Flight Engineer had to be Qualified in either Engines, Air Frames or Electric/Hydraulic Systems. To quaify commercially without military experience it required A&P.

They sat the third seat and monitored all flight instrumentation.  In some aircraft the FE sat between the pilots on take off and landing and was responsible for power settings.

Computers and less demanding functions of flight gave airlines the opportunity to reduce cost by eliminating the 2nd officer, i.e. Flight Engineer.

He was a third pair of eyes and third voice for decisions.  I firmly believe 911 would have had a different outcome if there ha been one more person in the cockpit.

  7. In aviation, a flight engineer is a member of the aircrew of some aircraft. The flight engineer is responsible for monitoring and controlling many of the aircraft systems during flight.

    Its not aircraft maintenance engineer.
