Michael Schumacher has more F-1 championships and world glory than anyone else but by his own admission he would never strap on an Indy car.

It is between Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, but probably Dale Earnhardt even though Petty has more wins. Earnhardt was most likely a better racer. They both had 7 championships, tied for the most ever. If Earnhardt hadn't died, he'd probably have at least 8. I wish he was still alive so that he could use his Aggressive Driving Style to give Kyle Busch a piece of his own medacine.

depends upon how you define "best driver" and if you mean in nascar or in all of motorsports.  heck, john force has dominated nhra funny cars so long most people have lost count of his wins (1000 round wins) and championships (14, including 10 in a row).  

sticking to nascar, i think there have probably been many better drivers than petty or earnhardt, they just never received the recognition those two did because they may not have had as many wins or as many championships.  and as so many people seem to love to keep reminding us rowdy's world citizens, wins don't mean everything.  

junior johnson, fireball roberts, david pearson, darrell waltrip, cale yarborough, tim richmond, ernie irvan, alan kulwicki, davey allison, bobby allison, richard petty, neil bonnet, harry gant, dale earnhardt, jeff gordon, tony stewart, jimmie johnson and more have been labeled great drivers.  and no one will ever know how far at least three or four of these drivers would have gone as they died young in their careers, or others as they started late in their lives.

ps.  take notice rowdy's world bashers - some of us do know a thing or two about nascar PKB (pre-kyle busch), as well as other forms of motor sports.
