Vladislav Tretiak - 1972 and 1974 game against Canada. CCCP won both and was Canada's only loss of the cup both times. The scores were 2-1 (1972) and 7-3 (1974). Most of you probably never heard of him.

Patrick Roy - Played in 11 all-star games, won Conn Smyth Trophy 3 times, won William M. Jennings Trophy 5 times, won Vezina trophy 3 times and retired his number he was so good.

  1. Oh, Patrick for sure!!

  2. Patrick Roy.

  3. one of the best in world competition vs one of the best in NHL

VT- member of 9 times gold winner CCCP (international play, olympic and canada cup) 5 time MVP, in HOF even he didnt play in NHL

    PR- you brought it up.

taking things into consider, both guys have good teammates all around. its close but  my vote goes to VT over PR.

  4. You ask a question then insult us by saying we probably never heard of the guy?!?  That wasn't very nice!  :-)

Since Tretiak never played in the NHL we'll never know.

Sure Roy has all those awards but that's not fair to use that against Tretiak because he never had a chance at those awards.

My personal opinion, I think he would have more awards than Roy if he had a chance to play in the NHL.

  5. People her who say he hasnt done c**p in the nhl..

Well go look at hasek and ed belfour..

Guess who was chicagos goalie coach while they were there. exactly.

  6. Martin Brodeur.

  7. Vladislav Tretiak

  8. Tretiak! best goalie that ever lived. Alot of people have NEVER heard of him, but if they actually knew who he was, they would agree!

  9. V.T.

  10. I myself was born in 1976 + know plenty about Vlad, who came to be during the 1972 Summit Series (won by Canada 4 - 3 - 1 thanks to HENDERSON SCORING WITH 34 SECONDS LEFT !!) but to answer your ? we will never know because Tretiak had few games against NHL competition aside from that and by the same token, Roy had all but none against the top international teams (except for the 1998 Olympics in Nagano)

DC .. easy on the criticism of Dryden .. Tony Esposito wasn't all that sharp either the Canadians underestimated the Russians' skill and fitness level (I know because I have spoken to Bobby Clarke about this) and you gotta remember, Dryden had just finished his 1st full NHL season.

  11. Hands down, ROY!!!! The MOST fun to watch, and I love his "presence". As Patrick said, theres Hockey season, then there's the playoffs"! That was one guy who REALLY know when to turn it on!!!!

  12. patrick roy

  13. Roy

  14. asf

  15. NEither there both terrible =P

  16. hmm......patrick roy.  .

  17. Roy. He is the greatest goalie in NHL history other than Brodeur and Sawchuk

  18. As much as i hate him, im gonna have to go with roy

  19. Patrick Roy because he has the most wins in NHL history

  20. 1972 was The Summit Series, which Canada won (barely) 4-3-1.  There was no "cup" involved. The main reasons why Canada did so poorly were Ken Dryden was awful in the series, the Canadian "team" was just a collection of all-stars with little chemistry or experience playing together, and the Soviet skaters were in much better physical condition, enabling them to dominate the later periods. Tretiak played well, but was not a dominant factor in the series.

1974 was another Summit Series, but that time only WHA players represented Canada and the Soviets won 4-1-3. Again, there was no "cup" involved.

The first Canada Cup was 1976, which the Canadians won easily (4-1-0) and the Soviets finished 3rd (2-2-1).

I have watched most of those games and Tretiak was very good, but I'd still say Roy was better.
