I'd say Fischer, if only because he came up with all those brilliancies on his own. His games will continue to be published and analyzed and revelled in and inspire millions of chess players throughout the world to create their own brilliancies -- and the chess tournament reforms he pushed so hard for will be cherished -- long after his madman's rants and legal troubles have become nothing more than a distant memory!

Who is sanest?  Kasparov, easily.

Best?  In his era?  Fisher had no state behind him as he took on the Soviet machine.

Kasparov had the reluctant support of  the guys that favored Karpov, but at least Kasparov is one of ours.

No contest.  The paranoid nut was better.  (Maybe being insane allowed him to fixate more...)

I would say Garry Kasparov is the best chess player of all time, better than Bobby Fischer for many reasons, but only just, the main one being he dominated the chess world fro 20 Years.

I remember Bobby Fischer beating Boris Spasky in 1972, studying every single game.

Fischer refused to defend his title in 1975, so on longevity alone I have to give it to Kasparov by a short head.

i wish i could say fischer, but kasparov was much more consistent, and dominant. he never went into hiding and had few troubles. if you are talking about individual matches, spassky vs. fischer is tops!
