there is really no comparison between the two boxers outside of their methods. ali inspired many fighters in the modern era of boxing as far as ringmanship and quality of opposition.

Better at what?  Bowling?  Tennis?  Golf?  Making dumb decisions involving exploiting himself in a made-up "wrasslin" match?  

Because if you mean BOXING, it saddens me that you had to ask.  (If you meant "wrasslin" then definitely Floyd.  It should be noted, though, that Ali participated in a "sorta fight" with Antonio Inoki, but at least Inoki was really trying to hurt Ali.)

There's a real simple way to do this it's involves using an algorithm and some ingenuity. (More of the latter and not the former). List their opponents side by side and see where they rank all-time. Ali has fought the absolute best without question. Remember an undefeated record doesn't mean much if you haven't been tested. The greatness of Ali is that after he would lose he would come back and win in dramatic fashion. No comparison! Not even in the same stratosphere!
